Support for automating data out from SQL Azure

Hi,

First of all, great tool, keep up the good work!

I'm just wondering if it' possible (either via the MWBatch or via custom code using the Utils library) to automate some kind of transfer from SQL Azure to either local storage, or maybe even Azure Storage.

The ideal scenario would be to run a a worker role that:

  1. Copies a database to a new database in the cloud (to maintain data consistency during the bcp operations)
  2. Copies over the data from each table directly to Azure blob storage using bcp, labelling each file with the datetime in the name (or perhaps in separate containers?)
  3. Deletes copies older than a specified date
  4. Deletes the temporary database that was created for the backup so that you only need to pay for the time it takes to backup

Is this possible with the current tool? I couldn't seem to find the necessary functions needed to make it work.

Many thanks.

Hi,

No, SQLAzureMW or MWBatch does not do these things today.  Do note that you can do item 1 above (see: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee336274.aspx).  CREATE DATABASE xxx AS COPY OF yyy.  In regards to #3 and #4, you could write a simple program that listed the databases, dropped the old ones, and then did the CREATE DATABASE as shown in the link above.

Sorry,
